Pelvic pain
Pain experienced in the lower abdomen and pelvis is called pelvic pain and may arise from female reproductive organs or from bowels or bladder. Sometimes the cause of pelvic pain cannot be identified even after investigations.
Pain that arises suddenly is called acute pelvic pain and may be caused by ovarian cysts, pelvic infection, appendicitis, bladder infection and bowel spasm.
Pain that is persistent or intermittently comes and goes, is called chronic pelvic pain, and may be caused by endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, scar tissue, chronic infection, irritable bowel syndrome and interstitial cystitis. Sometimes, the pain may arise from the muscles and ligaments of the pelvic floor.
Acute and chronic pelvic pain need to be checked out by investigations so that the cause may be treated.
How do I find what is causing pain
Mr Alak Pal will review your symptoms and medical history. A pelvic ultrasound is almost always necessary to detect causes such as ovarian cysts, fibroids and endometriosis.
Sometimes, a laparoscopy may be needed to diagnose and treat the cause of pain such as endometriosis and scar tissue. Symptoms of bladder infection or irritable bowel syndrome may need investigations for the bladder and the bowel.
Mr Alak Pal can also offer to investigate the urinary bladder with a camera ( cystoscopy) and provide treatment. He can refer you to a colorectal specialist if he feels that the bowels need further investigations. However, a laparoscopy is usually necessary before a cystoscopy (examination of the bladder).
