Mirena coil insertion and removal
Mirena is a hormonal intrauterine system that is licensed for treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) for up to 5 years. It is inserted into the uterus and releases the hormone levonorgestrel in small doses (initially 20 μg/24 hours) into the uterine cavity. It also acts as a long acting reversible contraceptive.
Insertion of Mirena
Insertion of the Mirena intrauterine system (IUS) is done by a health care provider using a special applicator. Two strings connected to the device extend beyond the cervix into the vagina and allow for device removal.
What to expect after Mirena insertion
Uterine cramping is common after insertion of Mirena and can be relieved by oral analgesics such as paracetamol and ibuprofen.
Irregular bleeding and spotting is normal for the first few months; in some cases, women may experience irregular bleeding or spotting for up to 6 months after insertion of Mirena. This bleeding can be troublesome at first but usually will become lighter quickly.
Your periods will likely be shorter and lighter with a Mirena intrauterine system and approximately 40% of women may stop having periods altogether.
Removal of Mirena
The Mirena intrauterine system is usually removed by your healthcare provider by traction on the threads felt in the vagina. Occasionally, the threads can retract within the womb, and removal may need use of a coil retriever and sometimes under direct vision with a hysteroscope.
