Hormone Replacement Therapy
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) consists of delivering low dose estrogen and progestogen to alleviate symptoms of menopause.
Symptoms of menopause
Many women experience both physical and emotional symptoms, such as hot flushes, night sweats, extreme tiredness and exhaustion, anxiety, irritability and brain fog. For women who find the symptoms interfering with daily life, HRT may be an effective treatment.
Hormone Replacement Therapy ( HRT)
HRT is now available in body-identical formulations. Estrogen is best delivered through the skin either as a gel or as a transdermal patch. Progestogen can be delivered either as a patch or as oral tablets. Use of body-identical preparations have reduced the risks of strokes and thrombosis previously associated with HRT usage. Progestogen is required to protect the lining of the womb (the endometrium) and can also be delivered through the Mirena intrauterine system.
Vaginal estrogen
Menopausal or perimenopausal women often experience vulval irritation or recurrent cystitis-like symptoms which may need additional local estrogen cream or pessary. This may be needed on top of the HRT.
