Vaginal Support Pessary for prolapse
A vaginal support pessary is a flexible, removable device that is inserted into the vagina as a support to keep the pelvic organs in place.
Why do I need a vaginal support pessary
Your pelvic organs such as the uterus, bladder or rectum may have dropped down into the vagina because your pelvic floor muscles are weak, and/or the vaginal elastic supports have become weak due to childbirth or ageing and/or normal ‘wear and tear’; this is a condition called Pelvic Organ Prolapse.
What are the benefits
• A vaginal support pessary can be used as an alternative to surgery and can ease your symptoms, making you feel more comfortable.
• A vaginal support pessary can relieve prolapse symptoms while you are undergoing physiotherapy and waiting for surgery.
• A vaginal support pessary can also relieve prolapse symptoms while you are recovering after childbirth
What are the risks
If you experience any of the following symptoms, you must report these to Mr Alak Pal:
• An increase in vaginal discharge which is smelly and/or irritation
• Vaginal bleeding or pain or discomfort
Difficulty in passing urine or opening bowels
Different types of pessaries
Mr Alak Pal will discuss and recommend which pessary you would use depending on the type of prolapse, previous surgeries that you may have had, and if you are sexually active.
What happens after the pessary is fitted
Once the pessary has been fitted, it will need to be changed every 6 months.
Mr Alak Pal will take a brief history, if you have had any problems with bleeding, discharge, urinary problems, bowel problems or discomfort. The pessary will then be gently removed and the vaginal walls checked for any infection or ulcerated areas. If there are no abnormalities a new pessary will be fitted.
