Hysteroscopic resection of endometrial polyp
Endometrial polyps are most often removed by a procedure called hysteroscopic resection.
How is the surgery done
A hysteroscope, which is a thin, illuminated camera, is passed through the vagina and cervix into the cavity of the womb. A very thin heated loop attached to the hysteroscope is used to remove (resect) the endometrial polyp so it does not grow back. The procedure can be done under general anaesthesia or with sedation. As the procedure is done through the vagina, no incisions are made on the outside or on the abdomen.
How should I prepare for surgery
The procedure is best avoided during periods but can be done if the bleeding is light. If you are to have a general anaesthesia, you will be asked not to eat for 6 hours and not to drink for 4 hours prior to the surgery. The procedure and the anaesthesia together may take up to 40 minutes.
What should I expect after surgery
Most patients can go home on the same day, a few hours after the surgery. You may note increased cramping and vaginal bleeding for a day or two after the procedure. You should be able to return to routine activities thereafter. However, as the internal healing can take up to 2-3 weeks, it is recommended to avoid sexual intercourse and vaginal douching until after the next period.
