Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections
Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common problem in women and can be uncomfortable, frustrating and disruptive to everyday life. Some women experience repeated episodes of burning or discomfort when passing urine, urinary urgency, frequent urination or lower abdominal discomfort, with symptoms returning after previous treatment.
A recurrent UTI is commonly defined as two or more episodes within six months or three or more within a year. Repeated infections can affect work, sleep, exercise, relationships and confidence, particularly when symptoms continue to return despite treatment.
There are several possible reasons why UTIs may recur. Factors can include previous urinary infections, sexual activity, changes associated with menopause, urinary incontinence and problems with completely emptying the bladder. In some women, however, no specific underlying cause is identified.
At Private Gynaecology, Mr Alak Pal provides assessment and treatment for women experiencing recurrent urinary tract infections and other urinary symptoms. A private consultation can help establish whether your symptoms are consistent with recurrent infection, whether further investigation may be appropriate and which treatment or prevention strategies may be suitable for you.
