Urodynamic test
A urodynamic test is used to find out how your bladder, sphincter (the muscle around the neck of the bladder) and urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body) are working. A urodynamic test can help find out the cause for bladder problems such as urinary leaks and also difficulty in passing urine.
Why do a urodynamic test
The purpose of a urodynamic test is to find out:
- if your symptoms are due to involuntary contractions (squeezing) or overactivity of your bladder muscles
- if you have the bladder capacity we would normally expect
- if your bladder pressure is normal during filling and emptying
A urodynamic test is usually performed as an out-patient procedure and takes about 45 minutes. The test results will help in deciding your treatment and if you need surgery.
How to prepare for a urodynamic test
You may be asked to keep a voiding diary for three days before you come for your appointment. A voiding diary is a record of how much urine you pass. You will need to record what type of fluid you drink, when and how much, and the timing and volume of urine output. You may also be asked to give information about when you experience urgency or urinary leakage.
How is a urodynamic test performed
You will be asked to pass urine into a special equipment that will allow measurements to happen. A computer is used to automatically measure the amount and flow rate, creating a graph that shows any changes.
Test results will let Mr Alak Pal know if you have weak bladder muscles or weak sphincter or a blockage.
